Future of the Web

CAVEs, Connections, & Corporations

Introduction

What is the future of the Web? Where do you begin? Is there a future for the Web?

Many of us see the Web (and Internet) as one of the most amazing inventions ever. For the first time, people around the world are connected to a common location. People have the choice to communicate with netizens throughout the world with a click of the mouse.

This will probably to viewed by future generations like we think of the radio. I don't think that the Internet will disappear, only it will probably move into the background so that people won't even think about it. Let's take a look at some inventions that are making this possible now. Get together in a group and discuss some of these things and what they would do in the future. I.E., what will telephones be like in the future, what about video games, or television......

After this class we will go to the Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. We will be visiting the CAVE (CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment). The CAVE can't be explained very well, it has to be experienced. I can say that it is a 3-D environment that can react to the users movements and commands. Here a short history of the CAVE, read it before we go.

These are some suggested readings. They are a little difficult to read. I'm not requiring that you read them, but they could give you a better idea of what the future is.
