Introduction

This course is titled, Academic Writing for MATESL Students. It serves two major purposes for international MATESL students at this University.

  1. It gives important background and practice to current graduate students, who are required on a dialy basis to engage in a variety of academic writing exercises.
  2. It gives MATESL students a chance to "practice what they preach" in writing instruction.
Most international students in the MATESL program will return to their countries of origin upon completion of their graduate studies here at the University. They will fill posts from elementary to higher education as well as private institutes catering to pre-school students and business people alike. The focus of the MATESL program is adult education and it is usually the case that adult students are preparing to operate in "westernized" situations including business and educational environments. In these situations, American academic styles of writing and the different stategies utilized in academic writing are useful: summarizing, paraphrasing, and outlining. Students will learn and practice these techniques while concurrently researching and demonstrating alternative methods of instructing these materials.
